Great-Grandma's Recipe Book

One of my greatest lessons in natural health was being shown my great-grandmother’s personal recipe book by my grandmother. This great little Danish lady, Martina Geneva Jensen Gee, was a leader of her church’s local women’s organization for over 29 years, which meant caring for the sick, new mothers and the elderly.

In her recipe book, I found recipes for colds, chilblains, and other ailments next to her recipes for pot roast, mustard pickles, and cherry-filled cookies.

The Herbmasters Blog is entitled “Great-Grandma’s Recipe Book” as our homage to the pioneers of the past, who weren’t afraid to whip up their own remedies. They used the items in their pantries to do so – roots and leaves and fruits and other items that worked effectively and safely.

In our weekly (and more frequently) blog posts, we will draw from your comments whenever possible to create subject matter. We also welcome your contributions of home and folk remedies, or even just a great old-time recipe that you would like to share. We will draw from all of these things to create a weekly email that you will actually look forward to receiving, so don’t forget to join our mailing list.

Herbal Focus–Eucalyptus

Koala eucalyptusAs I write this, I am sitting in Sydney, Australia looking out on a refreshing day after a little rainfall last evening. Last evening I went to the harbor and wandered through some botanical gardens where I saw a few different indigenous herbs growing, including some eucalyptus trees. I also saw a cute little kookabura perched in one of the trees. The end result is that I’m writing a little focus article on eucalyptus, and will likely post additional focus articles on other herbs in the future. I am borrowing from the website, which offers valuable information on a variety of herbal products, and where you can read summaries on some of that research.

Medicinal uses and health benefits of eucalyptus:

Antibacterial properties -One study, published in Clinical Microbiology & Infection found that eucalyptus oil may have antibacterial effects on pathogenic bacteria in the upper respiratory tract.

However, results of the research “suggest that further studies to clarify the possible therapeutic role of E. globulus leaf extract in the treatment of respiratory tract infection are warranted.”

Relieving pain – there is research to indicate that eucalyptus oil has analgesic properties. A study published in the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation involved applying Eucalyptamint on the anterior forearm skin of 10 different subjects.

The authors of the study concluded that “Eucalyptamint, produced significant physiologic responses that may be beneficial for pain relief and/or useful to athletes as a passive form of warm-up.”

Promoting good dental health -eucalyptus has antibacterial activity against cariogenic (causing tooth decay) and periodontopathic bacteria. The use of eucalyptus extract chewing gum may promote periodontal health, according to a study published in the Journal of Periodontology which examined the effect of chewing-gum containing eucalyptus extract on periodontal health.

Stimulating immune system response – eucalyptus oil extract is able to implement the innate cell-mediated immune response, according to a study titled “Stimulatory effect of Eucalyptus essential oil on innate cell-mediated immune response” which was published in BMC Immunology.

Other possible conditions that eucalyptus can treat include:

A stuffed nose
Wounds and burns
Bladder diseases

Eucalyptus is typically used externally/topically, or as an aromatic vapor as the strength of the oil is generally too strong for internal consumption without significant dilution. If you have somehow missed using oil of eucalyptus therapeutically with respiratory or other ailments, or skin conditions, you may want to obtain a bottle of eucalyptus oil to have on hand. Its effects are quick and effective–you can literally experience benefits in hours or minutes.
And as a last point, it is often added to vaporizers to assist adults, children, and babies experiencing respiratory distress.

Avoiding the “Whites”

There are so many different approaches to having a healthy food intake, and for all of them you can find evidence and often studies that support each approach. Oddly, some of the information is actually contradictory.
One dietary recommendation that seems to come up regularly in natural health is to avoid “white” foods. Depending on whose list you read, the actual whites can vary, but generally include the following:
1) White Flour Products–Most of the nutrients have been removed, and the 5 or so that are replaced are not in highly assimilable form. Diets that include large amounts of white flour leave the body malnourished. Additionally, the residue from white flour tends to solidify and impact the intestinal tract. Whole grain replacements should be used.
2) Refined/white Sugar–Refined sugar, and other highly processed sugar products, such as high fructose corn syrup upset blood sugar balance and feed yeast colonies that can infest body systems. Replace with honey, agave, stevia, or other natural or whole sugars, and use in small quantities.
3) White Rice–Like White flour, this is a refined starch containing little nutrition, adversely affects blood sugar, and produces unhealthy residue in the intestines. Replace with whole brown rice and basmati rice.
4) refined/White Salt–Excess sodium is corrosive to body systems, and affects blood pressure. Refined salt has been demineralized and has little nutritional value. Sodium products should be used in small quantities, and refined salt should be replaced with mineral salt.
5) Milk–Milk and other dairy products, contrary to advertising, are not good sources of calcium or other nutrients. Cows milk is food for baby cows, not people. Like the refined products listed above, dairy tends to clog eliminative systems, and cause the body to produce an overabundance of mucous. Milk and other dairy products neutralize stomach acid, and cause the body not to be able to assimilate calcium. Use almond milk and other vegetable based substitutes.
6) Potatoes–Potatoes are a simple starch rather than a complex carbohydrate, and affect blood sugar, while leaving starchy residue in the system. Actually, if you throw out 90% of the potato and consume only the potato skin, you will be eating a rather healthy food with a lot of nutrients, but unfortunately, most people throw out the skin and eat the unhealthy part.
An interesting result of avoiding the whites is that you will eliminate most of the “craving” foods that tend to cause people to gain weight or have difficulty in losing it. This one modification tends to cause people to be able to more easily achieve optimum weight without counting calories or ordering special meals. May your health always be your greatest wealth. Capsicum to the Rescue!

cayenne peppersOne of the major herb companies in the United States started because the founder had ulcers, and had been told that taking cayenne powder (capsicum) could help with the healing process in his stomach. He began using it, and found it to be effective. The only problem was that it was very hot to the taste. He and other family members conceived the idea of putting it in gelatin capsules, and this was the beginning of a very large company, called Nature’s Sunshine, and also the beginning of the capsulated herb industry.
Cayenne Pepper, or capsicum, with its red color, naturally makes us think of the circulatory system, and it is one of the fastest and most effective stimulants for dilating capillaries and allowing good blood flow.
Recently a good friend was admitted to the hospital with chest pains and other symptoms. One of the first things that doctors did was to check her circulatory system, and thankfully, they did not discover any concerns there, and she was released after a couple of days of monitoring.
I realized from this experience that it would be helpful to share a simple, but very beneficial piece of information. I have seen numerous circumstances where the fast-acting and potent effects of capsicum have been helpful to people in circulatory distress by almost instantaneously dilating capillaries and opening the flow of blood.
I would make a suggestion that your first aid kit, or purse, or pocket, always be equipped with a couple of capsules of capsicum, which can be swallowed, or opened and poured into the mouth. In order to get the fastest, strongest result, you do need to open the capsules and taste the hot capsicum peppers, but the general result is that they will cause the face to flush, and bodily fluids to flow, such as saliva, mucous and blood, and this can be of immeasurable value at the onset of extreme circulatory distress. It should be noted that you do need to wash this down with some water, and that the hot, spicy taste is intense, but will go away in a short time.
So, whether the condition is cold feet or hands, shock, or much more serious need for the body to have good blood circulation, this good old cooking herb favorite of those who like spicy foods, provides strong, fast, effective results. “Antibacterial, Antiviral, and Antifungal Herbs”

Do you remember the old song with lyrics: “Anything you can do, I can do better, I can do anything better than you.”
Well, in some cases, it’s just true, and when it comes to natural vs. pharmaceuticals, I’m about to provide you with some definitive lists of herbs with generations of proven effectiveness. What does the pharmaceutical industry counter with? Well, in an earlier post, I provided some statistical evidence indicating that in the U.S. we spend more than any other country on drugs, and yet are 37th in the world in overall health, and are flat-out LOSING the battle against infectuous disease.
It isn’t because we don’t have the right ammunition against any and every type of infection, it is that natural health doesn’t spend the dollars on marketing that the pharmaceutical industry does, so you have to dig into blogs like this to get the other side of the story. One little piece of the other side of the story that you might like to be aware of is, using 2012 statistics, there were 10 pharmaceutical companies in the Fortune 500 list. These ten pharmaceutical companies combined for profits that exceeded the combined profits of all of the other 490 Fortune 500 companies. Do you still have the illusion that your health is their greatest concern?
So, without any prioritization, we present to you here, a list of antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal herbs. I find it interesting that in the field of pharmaceuticals the antiviral category has no entries, but there are many antiviral herbs.

How to Poop Right

Okay, some of you knew this was coming. I’ve given seminars and keynote speeches on natural health to thousands of people, and every one of them eventually is reduced to the lowest common denominator–poop! As much as I would like to provide you with glamorous approaches to being healthy, eventually we have to address proper elimination as the most overlooked key to health, and the system at the center of it all is the intestinal system.
Let’s keep this short if not sweet. If you are not eliminating properly, it’s like bathing in a bathtub full of piranhas. Something bad is pretty much guaranteed to happen. So how do you know what constitutes proper bowel elimination? Basically, think babies. Most babies eliminate once for every meal they eat. One bowel movement per day is NOT proper elimination. The nature of the feces should be as follows: soft, not well formed, light in color, floats on the water, passes easily in less than 60 seconds. If that is not what you are experiencing, then you have two choices: 1) Make necessary changes; 2) Be resigned to the fact that you are now a high risk for every conceivable disease. Clear enough?
If you choose to make changes, I will suggest four important factors:
1) Drink plenty of clean fresh water, alkalized if possible;
2) Chew your foods until they have become liquid;
3) Consume 85% or more of your diet as vegetable, fruit, and whole grain products, 15% or less animal products.
4) Use an herbal cleansing supplement, preferably a comprehensive one. I was privileged to be instrumental in formulating a product that has been on the market for over 18 years called Pura Cleanse. This product is available through our office.
I am recommending this product because I don’t know of anything that matches up with this 36 herb combination product for comprehensive cleansing, not because I had something to do with its existence. And because I really do care about your health. You can spend a lot of money and anguish later trying to fix broken health, or you can take a few simple steps to insure that you will not become a victim of poor elimination. Herring’s Law of Healing

Healing means peeling in a way, like peeling back the layers of time, or peeling off the layers of an onion. It seems that the more we add into our lives, the greater the value of returning to where we were when we were young, and unencumbered with responsibilities and the complex and somewhat toxic stew we have created for ourselves. It makes me want to develop a good case of Peter Pan Syndrome, and just play for the rest of my life.
Actually, and more seriously, I find the process of peeling back the layers somewhat fascinating and definitely intriguing, and I get caught up in it like reading a good “whodunnit” novel. So for any of you life sleuths who would like some good clues as to how the process works, I was reminded yesterday of some guidelines about how our bodies heal themselves. It is called Herring’s Law of the Cure, or of Healing.
Basically, Herring’s law states that the body heals from the head down, from the inside out, and in reverse order to what the symptoms appeared. So let’s take a hypothetical person whom we will call Jane Healthfan. Jane has three nagging symptoms, and she decides to follow a natural health protocol of changing her diet, improving her attitudinal view of life, embracing a spiritual perspective on her life, and enhancing her healing with supplements for cleansing and toning body tissues, organs, and systems. In other words, she’s going to start doing tons of good stuff for her whole self. Simple to say, but not so easy to do.
Jane’s nagging symptoms chronic swollen gums that have challenged her since she was a child, digestive intestinal irritation that has started in the last couple of years, and persistent skin rashes that started as a young adult. What can she expect to happen?
1) Chances are good that she will begin with an increase in these symptoms, because symptoms are not the problem, they are the body’s methods of dealing with the problem. So she will likely have flare-ups of gum inflammation, diarrhea, and itching/burning skin rashes. Her body may also enlist other ways to eliminate the toxic buildup that it is trying to remove from these areas, like increased urination, fever, or cold symptoms like runny nose, sore throat, coughing, etc.
2) Jane’s body may or may not be capable of clearing up all of the conditions at one time–most likely it will need to cleanse and then rest, cleanse and rest, cleanse and rest until it has accomplished its long-term healing work. Each cleanse, we call a Healing Crisis, since it is part of improving one’s overall health, and sometimes they can be severe, and last for a few days or a few weeks. But they always end with the person feeling enormously better.
3) Now, we’ve purposely kind of mixed up the symptoms in terms of Herring’s law, because that’s the way things are in our bodies. But the most likely order for the symptoms to go away for good will be the gums, then the digestive, then the skin. On the other hand, since the gum condition has lasted the longest, it may be the last to disappear, because we do not know how deep or how much toxicity there is that has been built up over the years. Since the digestive problems are the most recent, and on the inside, they will likely be the fastest to heal.
How long should this process take? There are a lot of factors, including our constitutional strength, metabolic rate, mental and spiritual attitudes, and how aggressively we tackle the process. It isn’t an overnight process, and generally requires a month or more for every year that the condition has existed. Yes, you can speed up the process, but it depends on whether you like feeling like you are in the middle of a tornado. Of course, your body may have a different opinion than you do about how urgent the process is, and you may end up in that tornado whether you like it or not. The important thing is trust your body, and trust divine power and the universe that this is the path to healing, and that somewhere, beneath the layers, is the healthiest version of you, and that you will feel so much better with each layer that you peel away. It may not sound as fun as being Peter Pan, but you won’t have to fight Captain Hook or dodge crocodiles either. May your health always be your greatest wealth. Dallin–The Herbmaster

The Waves and The Flow

The Ocean–world of contrasts, home of the world’s largest creatures, and its smallest, it’s most vicious and mild, where giant ships can cut through its waters supported yet free, or be dashed to pieces to end up buried in a grave under miles of deep blue.
The ocean is two worlds, above and below. The distance between these worlds is only about 20 feet or so. Above is the world of waves, a turbulent world that can change from calm to deadly in a matter of hours. The world of waves respects nothing but itself, and will reach her watery hands to grab life and property from the lands that surround her in a tidal wave or tsunami. She will buoy the swimmer, the surfer, the skiff and the sloop, then dash them against the rocks remorselessly. She is the destination of nightmares and daydreams. She is home for the son of a son of a sailor, and she never gives up her dead when the gales of November come early.
The world below is the world of flow, the world that begins as the rays of the sun begin to dim in the filtering blue. This is the land of mystery, and of perpetuity, and of silence, and of never-changing currents, land of schools, land of gentle giants, land of the eternal twilight, never wavering, and always flowing, flowing, flowing.
A few years ago, a pile of debris washed up on the California coastline. It contained fishing equipment that had sunk into the deep off the coast of Asia. Research on the contents of this mysterious find showed that the debris, had begun its journey of thousands of miles across the Pacific about 100 years ago, and had sunk below the surface to join the suboceanic flow, never once rising again to the surface, nor sinking to the bottom, always flowing for about a hundred years until it arrived, gently landed on a foreign shore, to become an historical treasure.
Life is a world of contrasts, two worlds, above and below. Daily life can be turbulent like the waves, a world of crests and troughs, that can change in a matter of hours from daydream to nightmare, or the reverse, it can buoy us up, or dash us against the rocks.
But beneath the surface of life is the world of flow, a mysterious, perpetual current that never wavers. We can choose to ride the waves, suffer the gales, or be snatched by life’s tsunamis. Or we can choose to sink gently to the land of twilight, where the flowing current will carry us forward on a journey of about a hundred years, to be gently deposited on our own foreign shore, with the treasure of a lifetime of experience surrounding us.

Dry, Cracked Skin Recipe

I attended a breakfast meeting a few weeks ago for networking. Seated at the table was a lady who has suffered for years with dry, cracked skin on her hands. I had a couple of ideas, but told her I would email her some suggestions. I came home, did a little research, and found a wonderful website called Clever name, cute pin-up girl in the logo, natural, practical stuff on the website, and this amazing recipe. So I’m sharing it with full disclosure and encouragement to check out Crunchy Betty’s website.
Before I do, the thing that prompted me to post this recipe, is that not only has this recipe become a solution for one lady’s hands, she’s now sharing it with other people, even invited a whole group of ladies to come over and try it, and they are using it on feet and other body areas–I’m not asking where, and it seems to be producing incredible results.

The Lean, Green Hand Moisturizing Machine Recipe
1/2 of an over-ripe avocado
1 Tbsp olive oil
1/8 c. sugar
4-5 drops patchouli essential oil
Mash the avocado well, until you have a thick paste. Blend the olive oil in completely, and continue stirring as you add the patchouli essential oil. Quickly stir in the sugar.
To use: Over the sink, place a healthy-sized glob of avocado hand treatment in your hands. Rub your hands together, scrubbing every inch, but concentrating on super dry areas. Leave this on for 30 seconds to a minute, and then scrub your hands together while rinsing off under lukewarm water. Finish with shea butter or a moisturizer of your choice. Repeat this treatment once or twice a day for three days.
Put the remainder of your avocado hand treatment in a glass container with a lid, and store in your fridge for up to three days. If the sugar in your avocado hand treatment dissolves too much, just add a bit more sugar before using.
That’s it. You’re done.

Four Categories of Active Constituents in Herbs

In herbology, we have a belief that God has a sense of humor, because as you walk out the door to go to a doctor or pharmacy for expensive medications, therapies, or surgeries, you will probably trip over a plant that contains the remedy for what ails you.
The topic of this article is actually “Why do we use herbs?” Herbalists have existed in every culture from ancient times. Indigenous tribes knew what plant parts to use to deal with pains, wounds, etc. Historical data shows that in many cases, plants were used for the same purposes by cultures that had no contact with each other. Some plants were practically worshipped, as in cascara sagrada, which means Holy Bark, and Alfalfa, which roughly means “the god of all plants.” Viable licorice root has been found in the tombs of some Egyptian Pharaohs. There is such a body of historical evidence supporting the use of herbs for therapeutic means, that a better question would actually be, “Why would a person NOT use herbs?” Or perhaps, “Are there cogent and empirical reasons for using herbs therapeutically versus medications?”
I’d like to first do a little comparison between herbs and medications, and then move on to some explanation about herbs, so let me tackle herbs vs. medications as expeditiously as possible:
1) Herbs are whole food products which are balanced rather than chemical isolates which are not;
2) Many medications are fairly recent, so their effects on our bodies have not been studied over the long term, while herbs have thousands of years of documentation usage to determine safety.
3) The margin of error for toxicity for medications is extremely narrow, while the margine of error for toxicity for herbs is extremely broad.
4) The most serious side effects for herbs is typically a little vomiting or diarrhea, while the most serious side effects for medications includes liver disease, and death.
Now to be fair, many medications have origins that are related to herbs, either through the extraction of chemicals, or the creation of analogous chemicals to mirror plant effects. Aspirin and valium are among these medications. The difference though, is that when you take a single chemical and put it into a pill, you do not have the same results that you do from a food product that contains hundreds of chemical compounds that balance each other. As a result, several hundred deaths per year are attributed to simple little aspirins, but none to white willow bark, containing salycin, which was the inspiration for aspirin.
Now on to more pleasant discussion. Why do herbs do what they do? As previously stated, herbs are food items. They provide nutritional benefits at four different levels.
1) Macro-nutritents–Herbs are a source of the primary nutrients found in all foods, including proteins, fats, carbohydrates, and fiber.
2) Micro-nutrients–Herbs are richer than most other foods in micro-nutrient vitamins and minerals. They also contain food enzymes, which aid in digestion. Every herb that is on the “Generally Recognized as Safe” (GRAS) list has been profiled to identify its macro and micro nutritional components.
3) Active Constituents–Herbs contain a significantly higher proportion per weight than most other foods in various chemical compounds that stimulate physiological responses in the human body. For example, we all know that a muscle cannot move unless there is a nerve impulse, and there cannot be a nerve impulse without a neuro-chemical transmission, and that these neurochemical transmissions are dependent on the proper chemical components and stimuli being present. So if a particular herb that we consume contains the tools that the body needs to either create the cells, tissues, organs and systems of our body, or to stimulate the actions performed by these systems, then our body can function normally.
The four general categories of herbs with their specific chemical constituents are:
A) Aromatic/Fire Herbs–Contain aromatic or volatile chemicals that are needed to stimulate actions in the body, improve circulation, digestion, nervous function, etc.
B) Mucillant/Water Herbs–Contain complex polysaccharides, which we call soluble fiber, these herbs are soothing to irritated or inflamed systems, and absorb water and toxins for elimination.
C) Bitter/Air Herbs–Contain highly bioactive alkaloids and glycocides, these herbs are effective activators and cleansers, useful especially for the intestinal system
D) Astringent/Earth Herbs–With their constituent acidic compounds, these herbs are effective in toning, tightening and squeezing body tissues, assisting organs in all systems to remain toned and functional for use.
Every herb contains constituents from more than one category, but most are predominantly able to be categorized into one category. Having a working knowledge of these four categories simplifies the process of selecting specific herbs to be used for various health imbalances. 4 The final category of nutritional factors in herbs is the energetic qualities of the herbs. It is a simple fact that our bodies are primarily composed of energy, NOT STUFF! Increase the size of a single atom to the size of a basketball, and the particles of matter are still too small to be perceived without a microscope. Herbs have certain affinities connecting them with specific systems and functions in the body, like a magnet. These characteristics have not been studied as extensively as the other nutrient levels of herbs. For more information on this topic, research information on the “Doctrine of Signatures.”

The Five Rules to Drinking Water

About 60% of the adult human body is water (although I know some people who are probably 60% Mountain Dew). Our bodies use this water for a variety of purposes, and one of the most important of these is to help control the passage and utilization of nutrients and removal of toxins. Can you imagine what would happen to our bodies if the supply lines were suddenly stopped? Having sufficient water in our system is so important that we become thirsty when we have lost only 2 to 3% of our body’s water content.
It would probably be redundant to spend a long time discussing the importance of water. We have all been taught all our lives how important it is to drink plenty of water–8 glasses per day, how many times have we heard that? Do you really drink more than 64 ounces of water per day? What if I told you that it is one of the two most important things you can do to insure long-term health? (Of course, your first question would be, what’s the other one, and the answer is “Chew Your Foods Thoroughly.”)
The real subject of this article is to provide you with the five rules to drinking water. These will be self-explanatory:
RULE 1–Water means water. Other drinks do not count toward your water consumption. In fact, the following drinks should actually incur a water penalty because you will require more water to flush out the negative effects of these liquids: sodas, coffee, tea, sugary drinks, alcohol. Even though some of these other drinks may have some health benefits, they introduce acidic residue into the system that must be diluted.
RULE 2–Drink your water at any time other than with meals–when having a meal, the most important thing is good digestion, and that requires concentrated digestive fluids that should not be diluted. From the beginning of the meal to about 60 minutes after the meal, consumption of water should be limited. Chew foods more thoroughly rather than washing them down with water.
RULE 3–Use the best quality of water possible–Impurities in the water must be dealt with by our bodies, so use a high quality source of water, preferably a source that you control, or know what quality control measures are used in production. Debates are constantly raging over the different methods of water purification that are used, I actually like to alternate between distilled and reverse osmosis processing because I believe that both methods offer some advantages and disadvantages. And we strongly advise against regular use of individual bottles of water–they contain many impurities, and the amount of waste packaging is enormous.
RULE 4–Quantity trumps quality–As important as it is to find and use high quality water sources, do not starve yourself from water because you don’t have access to YOUR water. Body functions have to continue, and our bodies are good at dealing with that stuff from the water fountain or tap if that happens to be the only water available. So drink the available water, then figure out how to have a supply of YOUR water more readily available for the future.
RULE 5–Use naturally alkaline water–Our bodies tend to be too acidic, a result of stress, and over use of animal based and processed food products that leave an acidic residue in the body. My distilled water is naturally alkalized. They also play harmonic music 24 hrs a day in the room with the water storage container. When I drink this water, I know that I am drinking something that had thought and care put into it, the distillery is the same unit used in United States Embassies around the world.
To summarize, if the product we use to replace our body’s most abundant substance is carefully chosen to supply the best quality possible, if we consume enough quantity for our body to do its supply, cleansing, maintenance, and healing work, and we use a naturally alkaline water to help balance our body’s pH, then how much less work do you think will be required on other fronts to keep us healthy, or to restore health?
