Historical Herbs, Nutrients, and Body Systems

The list of systems below identifies the key organs, glands, and tissues that comprise the system, highlights key functions of each system, and provides some key herbal nutritional strengtheners for each system. Additional dietary and lifestyle modifications may also be necessary to promote total health in each body system.

Structural System – Bones and connective tissues, provides structure to the body. Imbalances include fractures and other traumas, demineralization, and inability of bone marrow to produce healthy new cells.

Nutritional Strengtheners: Mineral Rich Herbs like kelp and alfalfa, plus horsetail and oatstraw

Muscular System – Muscles, sheaths and other connective tissues, provides movement to the body. Imbalances include atrophy, inflammation, strain, tearing and other traumas.

Nutritional Strengtheners:Tonifying herbs primarily from the astringent category, including Red Raspberry leaves, ginseng and marshmallow root.

Circulatory System – Includes all arteries, veins, capillaries, and the heart, delivers oxygen and nutrients, removes toxins. Imbalances include occlusion, improper nutrient delivery, toxic buildup, nerve and muscle malfunction.

Nutritional Strengtheners: Aromatic herbs such as cayenne, ginger root, and catnip, plus bitter cleansing herbs like butchers broom and ginkgo biloba.

Nervous System – Consists of neurons and synaptic points throughout the body, and includes the spinal column, and delivers impulses to organs and muscles. Imbalances include demylenation, traumas, and chemical or electrical imbalances at synaptic points.

Intestinal System – Consists of Small and large intestines and accompanying organs, glands, muscles and nerves, and functionally provides absorption of nutrients and removes toxins from the body.
